The Competition Cross shopping this Big Block is interesting because aesthetically, this watch compares most closely to 90’s era Rolex Daytonas but monetarily, they’re incredibly different as the Daytona retails for multiples of the Tudor. Following the colorful “Homeplate” and “Monte Carlo” dials in the first two series of chronographs, the introduction of the Big Blocks heralded a more understated “Daytona-esque” dial; most commonly either black with silver/white subdials or vice versa. These dials featured applied hour markers, with beveled/sloping ends. From my first 1950's LeCoultre chrono (Valjoux 72) I bought 28 years ago through the Big Block years and now, I have always felt a two-register chrono just looked stupid. I like three sub-dials! One exception: Patek Philippe Nautilus chrono 5980.In a collecting world where ‘plexy-era’ Rolex and Tudor watches are highly coveted, the Big Block offers collectors an opportunity to own an Oyster chronograph at a very reasonable price point. In comparison, the plastic glass vintage Daytonas are actually quite diminutive with a 36mm case and 19mm lug width, against the 40mm/20mm Big Block.
